Marketing Flyers

In honor of reaching my first year anniversary with DFW Movers and Erectors, Inc., I would like to share two pieces I've written this past year.

DFW Movers and Erectors, Inc. gave me the opportunity to help write and edit flyers for their new marketing brochures. They explained their vision and I took and developed the large paragraph at the top. (See above)

I got to interview the head of the All Press Services department and write this fun piece to explain what they do.

"My Prayer"- A Part of My Meditations on Growing up

When I was four years old my mom and I would pray before I'd go to bed. And every night I would pray God would give me a sister. Mom would remind me to stay open to the idea of receiving a baby brother, but I would not comply. I would have a baby sister, and I did.

As the oldest, I was first to pioneer life. I taught Cora all I knew, how to tie her shoes, how to open an umbrella, and how to ride the slide into the pool. I was always the Captain of our ship, and she the First Mate. When I established the first small city on our driveway, she provided the chalk. When I decided to ride my bike along the inner coastal, she had Dad pull her alongside in the red wagon. I never embarked upon a journey without my sidekick sister.

I remember the first time Mom brought home a bra for Cora. I laughed, how could she ever need one of those? Cora inherited all my clothes but it never occurred to me why until one day instead of looking down I stared Cora in the eyes. Where did the little kindergartener with the big bouncy bow disappear too?

As Cora matures, I am astounded by the speed of my own growth.  Today she is still by my side, longing to be the first mate of my "grown up" adventures. She corrects my driving, drags me along shopping, and still asks me to open her umbrella.

We will always play a significant role in each other’s lives but I have ventured upon a threshold where Cora cannot follow me. I am shopping for a bridal gown now. I've stuffed, licked, and addressed at least one hundred wedding invitations. And even though my time has been packed full with wedding details my mouth still drops open when I am reminded Cora is twenty-three. When did I stop being twenty-three? How can I be so used to remembering her in diapers? Now I understand a little more how my mom feels when she says she can't believe I'm grown.

We all stand in awe of the change in each other. We are each other's measuring sticks. We speed through life a bunch of sleepy heads packed into a bus simply watching the scenery wiz by.  We need a jolt to shoot us out of our seats and propel us to leap out of the bus.

Cora has developed from a kindergartener into a young lady. I have grown from the toddler to the bride in the mirror. I do not know why Time trickles through the fingers, but I will not sit and watch it float away. Let me run, not away from time but deeper into it. I may not be able to out run time, but who says I can't enjoy the race?

Organizing Ninja Series: What’s your Personality?

I’ve found that not everybody is what I like to call a “folded color coded sock drawer.” Some people when they put things away would rather throw them into a drawer or a box and forget about them. I mean after all, they are technically “put away”, right?

Other people, start out organized but once stress or busyness encourages them to leave their clothes on the floor until tomorrow, tomorrow becomes stretched out over multitudes of tomorrows until the pile of clothes just seem too overwhelming to handle.

Other people are bothered by their mess but because they don't have an efficient way of putting it away, they leave it until they can work something out. Eventually, that place becomes THE place it stays.

Lets call these organizational personalities... the “disciplined sock color coder”,  the “throw n and put away”, the “tomorrow dreamer”, and “the not until its perfect”.

These are only a few of the combinations one can have. The key is becoming self aware of where your thoughts go when faced with a mess. Then, set a new realistic goal for yourself. And follow it up with practicing until it becomes a habit. (It takes 21 days to create a new habit- see more on building good habits in "Spring Cleaning for the Mind"

I’ve created a few questions to get you started in developing your organizing personality:
  1. What is your current organizational strategy?
  2. What problem would you like to fix in your room, closet, desk, etc?
  3. When faced with a mess, how do you usually handle it?
  4. If you could make one realistic change to your room, closet, desk etc.. what would it be?

Organizing Ninja Series: THE CLOSET

Organizational Personalities

Learning to organize the way that will fit you best and the situation best

Some people are just tidy. They can't work without a clean desk, they can't sleep if their bed wasn't made before they got in, and all their clothing is color coded in their closet for quick picking. However, most people struggle with organization because lets face it, not everyones bedroom can look like a staged model at Ikea. However, no matter how stuck we feel with “messy”, we all have the invitation to ignite change in our lives.

As one of those neat and tidy people who has lived with many different roommates over the years and currently resides with my sister, who is definitely one of those... eclectic types. I’ve learned we aren't all designed the same so why should “organization” only come in one box?

My hope is to dismantle some of the fear people have around organization and the word “discipline” when it comes to making changes in your everyday world. I want to encourage you to have hope, set a goal, get creative, and set your room to order.

With that, lets begin!

Spring Cleaning: The Closet, The Heart, The Mind:

An Introduction

We have had terrible snow days recently, but despite the snow and ice the cold has not stopped the myrtles from budding. A few mornings ago, I heard the sweet chirping of birds outside of my window. Their singing announced that spring was upon us whether winter liked it or not. I have always loved the springtime, especially because I get to watch the flowers bloom and the earth turn green again. Who can't help but smile when the daffodils’ sunny yellow faces bloom? Or when your azaleas pop with pink and purple petals.

When springtime comes, many people talk about refreshing themselves. We start work-outs in a desperate attempt to prepare for bikini season. We aim to clean the clutter out of our closets, or under our beds, or in our dressers, cabinets, and more. Some of us even strive to bring order to our hearts and minds. We slow down, take more walks with friends, or at least, plan to.
This spring time, I too want to get out and do some spring cleaning of my own heart, mind, and closet. Join me on this 14 day week journey to a better more refreshed blooming you.
